Nightclub opens with plus-sized crowd in mind

If there's one nightclub where Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" is enjoying a resurgence, it might be the new Club Plus Life in Sparks.

And that's no joke. Club Plus Life, which opened last week with the heavyset crowd in mind, did play the song. It references the rapper's delight in big butts, and the crowd loved it.

"We play it and love it," said Club Plus Life co-founder Anthony Piersanti. "We are all kind-hearted spirits who love ourselves, so music like that is fun. We played it opening night and everyone was out on the dance floor."

But Piersanti, 25, who started Club Plus Life with co-founder Jean Olson, 36, had a serious business plan in mind.

"It was uncomfortable going to your typical club," Olson said. "I was always the fat friend with the skinny girls. Going to a club where I was accepted was a breath of fresh air for me. At these (plus-sized clubs), everybody got to dance, and everyone's accepted."

And she means everyone. Although the club was created with plus-sized customers in mind, Piersanti himself isn't overweight and loves hanging out with the mixed crowds. He said he prefers larger women.

"We call it a size-acceptance club," Piersanti said. "We cater to the plus size, but we wouldn't turn away somebody who is thinner. Last Friday we had all shapes and sizes. Everybody could feel free to be themselves."

Piersanti and Olson are a couple who met at a plus-size club in California. They moved to Reno this year and found no such club existed.

"I had somebody come up to me and say 'thank you so much for bringing this,'" Olson said.

She said her and Piersanti tried a few different locations before signing on with Cantina Los Tres Hombres in Sparks to host Club Plus Life.

"We knew we were going to open it, we just didn't know where," Olson said.

"One of the California clubs said it best, that this is a community service and people need a place to go without feeling stereotyped," Piersanti said.

Last week's opening was such a success that Club Plus Life will be open every Friday at 10 p.m. at the Cantina, 926 Victorian Ave., as opposed to its original bi-weekly plan. Cover charge is $10, with DJ Soul providing the beats. This week features a costume party. Details: 356-6262 or www.clubpluslife.com.

with Hollywood these days? What is with the trend towards women looking like they are actually dying of something??? Take, for instance, the women from Desterate Housewives... Marcia Cross used to look hot and now she looks like she has cancer, for god's sake, and don't even get me started on Terri Hatcher! You can see every rib on that woman!

Zodiac and I are reality TV junkies, and we watched the premiere of the new season of Celebrity Fit Club last night, and this is the cause of this rant. Kelly LeBrock is on there. She was in that movie Manniquin and was married to Steven Segal. That woman looks fantastic! Her body reminds me of Marilyn Monroe. And she is on the fat show, and they say she needs to lose 35 pounds. Why? So she can get back into movies. There is a woman on there named Countess Vaughn (don't know who she is) who weighs 130 pounds!!! She is only 4'11" but give me a break... 130 and she is on Fit Club with Harvey Walden IV screaming at her???

Zodiac and I were watching a cable show called 'Dog The Bounty Hunter' last night. Just something we catch when nothing much else is on. Now, Dog is a bounty hunter in Hawaii, and his wife is really something. She looks to be quite short, and she is VERY VOLUPTUOUS! She dresses to show every bit of herself off, too... tight and seductive. On a commerical during the show, there was Kirsty Alley touting the weight she was losing using Jenny Craig. Got me to thinking....

Being a curvy, fluffy woman is a lot easier when we have good role models and some acceptance in our personal lives. When I was young, I had a cousin who, virtually every time there was an opportunity to give a gift, would buy some piece of clothing that was obviously waaaaay to small for me, and then when I opened the gift, would say, "OH! I didn't realize you were THAT big"....

Then I was married to a man who was overweight with a big ol belly, who would tell me that I was undesirable because I was too big.

There were no role models for larger women then, either. Like, people would always say about Mama Cass Elliot, 'oh she would be so beautiful if she would just lose some weight' It was awful.

Now, thank everything sacred, I am with a man who not only loves and lusts me the exact way I am, but actually would like it if I would gain a little more. I can see women like Dog's wife, Queen Latifah, Camryn Manheim and others who celebrate being a curvy woman. It feels a lot better this way.

Self esteem issues

We have such a great thread going under "acceptance and role models"! Two responses struck me, and I decided to start this thread as a result.

Self esteem is a tough one sometimes! It can be such a thin, lacy thread, one that is just waiting for some jerk to yank on and break. I LOVE that so many members here have good self esteem, but I just imagine that most all us BBWs have had issues at one time or another.

So what advice do we have for our sisters that are still struggling with this? In my case, my mother and step-father did a real number on me growing up, and only part of it was about weight. I think I actually gained weight for a kind of subconscious protection from my abusive, molesting step-father.

But it all blended together, weight and other issues, until I didn't have LOW self esteem, I had NO self esteem! Took me most of my life so far to overcome all that. It began with me realizing I was intellegent and capable of many things, and then embracing my Navajo culture. It ended with me falling in love with a man who absolutely adores me exactly as I am, and loves my curves.

But, what advice can we give? I read in the other thread that just a man who loves a BBW and constantly reassures her that she is sexy and desirable apparantly is not enough. What IS enough???

Looking for inspiration. Anyone want to share any sad, happy, or funny stories about a dating/hook up experience?

I've noticed my best dates are with people I'm not dating. One of my worst dating experiences (funny worst) was being asked out for dinner and being told how cool it was and then being taken to a place that used paper plates and styrofoam and plastic forks. Nice food, but not my idea of a great date. Seemed to go okay for a while, but then he started eating. He never shut his mouth. Ever.

IT is for real now summer is really here cause we are all busy as hell trying to stay cool........Or the fucking humidity killed us...But hey this summer is almost over and all of our grass will be back soon. Then my cacti will start crying because the days are cooler and shorter then the ones b4. And it will be time to sit out on the porch in the chilly evenings with sweaters on watching the bugs in the street lights getting fewer and fewer. Then our beautiful fall.....The leaves changing on the hill sides,like the entire foot hills of the Appalachia are on fire with orange and yellows and reds. like the native ancestors spirits coming out to make one more war cry before fading away in to the night..The animals will be making there stock piles for winter. The squirrels will be busy burying nuts and large seeds to tide them over on the warm days. The Beautiful buck with its glistening rack in the snow digging out some Little signs that a female has crossed his path. Then my father my 13 year old son and my self wrapping our selves in the many layers to stay warm and topping that all off with a blaze orange cap and vest,hoping to see that monster buck and wishing to out wit him this year.......Yes summer is almost gone but hey, Our lives are only beginning.. Remember its not just a life it is an adventure and living is the greatest adventure of all... Weather you carry a shot gun during hunting season or a camera all year long. I know this isn't a poem forum, per se, but I wrote this a few years back when I realized that it was more a question of historical timing and marketing than anything else - whether or not I was considered desirable. I drag it out every once in a while to remind myself of that.

Venus Reclining in a Landscape

Concealed in a small dark room,
in the museum,
is a woman
just like me.

She’s held together by
shards of colored glass -
so tiny - you need to look close
to see that she’s not whole.

Her languidly lush form was
endearingly shaped by some
Italian artist - long
since passed.

He had exalted in her round form as
much as in her pretty petite
ankles and feet
and long precious hair.
(Hiding nothing.)

She was no waif subsisting on
sugarfree and nonfat nouns, no-fun
beverages and muscle-toning work outs -
wearing the latest rag.
(She was fat.)

Neither did she veil her lushness
behind baggy tunics, colorful scarves,
permed hair or gaudy jewelry -
stealing Joy from her Self.
(But we hid her.)

Let me say - just once more -
She was Bountiful, Plenteous, Ample,
Lush, Fruitful,Abundant, Rich,
Plentiful and Replete of form.

I was ripped off by fashionandfun.com. I bought a corset there that ripped the very first time I put it on, and their refund email doesn't work! I tried to contact them from their site using every contact they had and they never responded. :o(

Weird problem

Please, don't get mad at me! I have a problem that is new territory for me... gaining/maintaining my weight. Zodiac loves me just like I am, or even bigger. We have LOTS of very vigorous sex and we walk a lot, and I went to the doctor yesterday and I had lost 13 pounds!

I eat two meals a day, breakfast and dinner. I usually have a yummy snack before bed. lunch is going to be very difficult to add into our lifestyle. So, any suggestions? I am hoping that I will just hit a weight and stay there, but I don't want it to be less than I am right now.

I don't want to get off on a rant here.......well maybe I do! As some of you may Know, one of my hobbies is going around on the net and finding pics that range from the sublimely erotic to the downright nasty. Destri helps me find stuff for my screensaver and we get wallpapers and stuff. we've found this to be a nice way to pass the time as well as get really turned on. Obviously, neither of us are fans of the barbie dolls that are very prevelant: Big fake tits, Bleached blonde hair and anorexic looking bodies.

one thing we just hate is the Horrificly repulsive things that people name their websites, none of which i'm going to name here because most of you have probably seen these sickening monikers and it would be in extremely bad taste to repeat them!!!!!

A lot of them are just plain insulting to all you beautiful women with curves and it pisses me off to the enth degree!!!!!!

and then theirs the fact that some of them that say BBW and the women are only like 5 pounds over weight, which I also think is insulting, and a big letdown when I go there expecting more curves!!!!!

These days, If you make a racial slur, people will crucify you ( and justifiably so) if you say anything homophobic the same will happen (also very justifiable), but people but "fat jokes" are still widely tolerated, and even encouraged in some lame circles, and i think this fucking sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

Losing weight...

I was looking around for a pic of Ann Wilson from the rock group Heart and discovered that she has had stomach surgery now, a la Carnie Wilson. I also was looking at some of the other tribes devoted to the worship of the BBW, and saw a post about yet another TV show coming on about people losing weight a la Celebrity Fit Club.

Man! This fries my banannas. It just reinforces the whole *only thin women are ok, you better do somthing to lose that weight or you will be old and alone* thang.

Gawd I will be glad when this pendulum swings back to where women who actually look like women who are not about to die of malutrition are valued! This whole *heroin chic* thing is just sick.

What size exactly crosses over into BBW zone?

I ask partially since in talking to and meeting women who use that term I am often amazed - many are what I would consider "normal or healthy" size although there are the few who seem to take the term BBW instead of the more accurate grossly obese. And today looking through the photo album of this tribe I again noticed that of all the photos (excluding the arwork) none of the women are what I would have described as being BBW with the exceptions of Camyrn, Mamma Cass and I will put whoopi into her own seperate little category as I cant stand her. The other women are of a normal or healthy size for a lack of better term so I am curious what is the 2005 definition of thin, normabl, bbw, fat etc????

You know, it is only in the last 50 to 75 years that thin women were ever thought to be the 'standard' of how women should look. Before this, women were supposed to have curves. The voluputous woman was the standard, and thin women were thought to be sick or too weak to make good wives and mothers.

The voluputous woman was seen as the 'earth mother', the one who was nurturing, strong and capable. After all, a stick thin woman would have never made it in any Indian tribe, as a pioneer woman traveling by covered wagon to begin a new life in a harsh environment, or as a companion to any hard working farmer!

Men who love us are just being men, ones who are not swayed by the media, but who see the value and comfort that a BBW can give.

I used to have such a problem being on top during sex! I never enjoyed myself because I was worrying constantly about how I looked. 'My belly is too big, my tits are sagging...'

Even now, with Zodiac, who thinks I am the sexiest woman in the world, I still have momentary backslides. So dumb! Obviously, if someone thinks we are sexy enough to have sex with us, they are not thinking about how we look while the act is going on. Such head games we can play with ourselves.

I have heard these so many times it makes my head spin.How about you? I am a very frustrated to those who mean well but....you know... what I am talking about.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves.The looks you get., in restaurants, or grocery store,..the friendly little hints...the catty remarks...how some just have to rub it in your face!
